Carol is Chuck’s mother. She is an intensely guarded and private person, fiercely protective of her garden and her individuality. She has deeply intertwined herself with her garden and the sense of control she can possess over it. Carol has built her life around routine and preservation, but driving that rigidity is a loneliness and difficulty letting go of the abandonments from her past (namely, by Chuck’s father). In this obsession with nature, she has become disconnected from other people, particularly her own son.
